Synopsis:
Xanadu is a musical comedy with the book by Douglas Carter Beane and music/lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar. The musical is based on the 1980 cult classic film of the same name, starring Australia’s own Olivia Newton John.
The musical’s story line focuses on a Greek muse, Clio, on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest creation of his life: a roller disco. But when Clio, disguised as an Australian roller girl named Kira, falls in forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and Clio risks eternal banishment to the underworld.
The musical very lovingly pokes fun at the movie in a satirical fashion. Basically, if you loved the movie (and it’s still a guilty pleasure) you will love the musical. If you hated the movie and thought it was ridiculous, the chances are that you’ll probably love the musical too.
The biggest draw card for Xandau is it’s pop-pop-tastic, scintillating score. Not only does it include the hits you know and love from the film, it incorporates more of the Electric Light Orchestra’s best loved tracks, including (but not limited to) “Magic”, “Evil Woman”, “Suddenly (The Wheels Are In Motion)” and, of course, the hit title song “Xanadu”.
